Chandragiri Hill | Day Tour by Cable Car

Chandragiri Hill is 2550 meters above from the sea level. It is in the south-west side of Kathmandu, about 8 kilometers away from Thankot. You can take a little break from the chaotic life of Kathmandu and go on a little adventure at Chandragiri Hills as it is only an hour drive away. This place is filled a little bit of everything for every generation which makes it extra special for people to visit there. The whole hill is covered with trees and Natural beauties. When you reach the top of the hill you can get a spectacular view of the Kathmandu valley and a panoramic view of many stunning mountains including Annapurna Range, Manaslu Himal and the greatest of them all, Mt. Everest if you look closely.

You can choose any means of transportation you like to reach the top of Chandragiri hill. If you chose to drive it is about 12 km ride. There are many people who choose to hike because they want to feel refreshed in the wild. The hike takes about 3 hours. But usually, people tend to ride on Cable car since it is the fastest way to reach the top. The cable car was officially started at 2016 A.D. It is 2.5 km long and takes about 10 minutes to reach at the top. The ride in the cable car can be thrilling but it is worth the picturesque view we get from there. We will ride from above the forests, showing us an amazing view of the beautiful green trees.

The temple of Bhaleshwor Mahadev at the top adds cultural and mythological significance to this place. Many worshippers of Lord Shiva visit this place to Worship him. People say that when Lord Shiva was mourning and traveling across the world carrying around the dead and decaying body of Goddess Sati Devi, her forehead fell on this hill and Bhaleshwor Mahadev was erected. It is believed that anyone who worships here, their wishes will be fulfilled and in their afterlife they can enter in Shivloka, “the land of Lord Shiva”. It is also said that king Prithivi Narayan Shah worshipped at this temple before conquering Kathmandu Valley during his Unification Campaign of Nepal.

Chandragiri hills have some historical significance also, It was from these hills that Late King Prithvi Narayan Shah caught the first glimpse of the scenic and vigorous Kathmandu Valley, which in fact was infused in the king’s mind and an idea of conquering the valley into his kingdom rose. So in the memory of him, you can find the statue of Late King Prithvi Narayan Shah on the right side of the Temple with one of his sayings and engraved.

In the front of the temple is a view tower from where you can see even better views of the Himalayas. And with the help of binoculars, you can get a closer view of the mountains covered in the snow looking divine. This is really the place if you want to take a day off from the chaos of your life and just stare at the mountains and feel at ease. This place is also suitable for a family with kids because there is a children’s playground also, which is provides them entertainment and makes them happy. There are swings, slides, see-saw, and ropes. Children are really fascinated by these things and want to play with them forever. You can even ride a pony there.
